About Us

The Griot is a non-profit making, apolitical and developmental association out to ensure the promotion, preservation, consumption and sustainability of indigenous and local folklore of the North West Region of Cameroon by:
  • Empowering the people of the North West Region socio-culturally and socio-economically through their folklore.
  • Documenting, marketing and exporting the folklore of the North West Region in various forms so that they can appeal to a wide range of the population.
  • Creating opportunities and platforms to encourage the younger generation to grow interest in local folklore.
  • Using infotainment, audiovisuals and creative ways to tell the stories of the people of the North West Region of Cameroon.
This association was founded because we came to the realisation that urbanisation, globalisation and the digital world have created a situation where popular cultures, which are not necessarily a melting pot of cultures, have taken the front stage and therefore pushed local and indigenous folklore backstage. The traditional modes that carted for the preservation and transmission of local folktales are gradually becoming outdated and less efficient as a result of a series of factors. The invasive mechanisms of the digital age that have been used to promote and sell foreign folklore can be redirected and used to the advantage of local stories. Our projects are therefore designed to use modern consumption trends or habits to foster the promotion, consumption, and distribution of local folklore and to ensure the involvement and participation of the population in the conservation of this aspect of their cultural heritage. Our mission is therefore to compile, document, expose the folklore of the North West Region and guarantee their sustainability and at the same time using folklore to empower the people.
