Celebrating the Women in the House

Today is International Women’s Day and as the founder and president of The Griot, I want to take this opportunity to acknowledge the contributions of two great ladies. This doubles as an introduction and celebration of these formidable members of The Griot Family who have been working behind the scenes.

 Geraldine Njang M.
She is the Secretary General and is responsible for the smooth running of the secretariat. Her diploma in Secretarial Computing and experience in public relations make her a square peg in a square hole. Her great editorial skills have lightened the drudgery of paper work. With a BA and MA in Letters, she is prepared to revolutionise the griot culture. 






Gladys Qualla E.
As the programs officer, her job is to oversee, monitor, and evaluate of all programs and projects of the association. She is a real griot whose interest in Theatre for Development was what attracted her to The Griot Family. With a BA in Theatre Arts and Cinematography and a certified counsellor, her contributions are just remarkable.

NGONNSO: THE CAGED GUIDING SPIRIT OF THE NSO PEOPLE

In recent years, there has been a call for cultural artifacts smuggled, looted and stolen from Africa to be returned to their rightful place and owners. Just like the "Bring Back Ngonnso" campaign we have today, a similar campaign was launched for the Afo-a-Kom in 1973. Kom and Nso do not only share a common Tikar origin; both groups were deprived of their guiding spirits that ended up in American and German museums respectively. While Kom succeeded in bringing back their revered Mbang, as It is fondly called, home in a publicised and well supported and endorsed restitution effort, Nso is bracing herself up for what seems like another legal and diplomatic set of negotiations.

THE STONING CEREMONY

On Tuesday, 7th June 2022, the Mankon people congregated at the village palace plaza in multitudes from far and near. After the missing fon, Fon Angwafo III had been mourned and the new fon revealed, one of the necessary and highly symbolic ceremonies that followed was the stoning ritual. Seeing the newly crowned fon run while being chased and shot with some objects was quite a spectacle. Many found this intriguing and couldn't comprehend why a fon would be shot at by his subjects and kingmakers. The motive of this ceremony is interesting and it observes specific guidelines with respect to traditional rites and rituals. The central figure during this ceremony is the new leader.
